In 1973 Doctor Frush began researching with
Doctor Smudde, Doctor T.L. Fitzgibbons, and Doctor Alan
Lowenstein on a new way to establish the proper vertical
and centric relation. Doctor Frush knew that the standard
way to establish vertical and centric relation, by having
the patient bite into soft wax only enabled the patient
to produce an acquired, and sometimes a pathologic bite.
From this research he designed and began manufacturing an
Intra Oral Bite Recorder called the Swissedent Ball Bearing
Bite Recorder, which was a new way to establish the proper
vertical and centric relation for the edentulous patient.
In 1975 Doctor Smudde moved to California to work with Doctor
Frush at the Swissedent Foundation full-time. He traveled
around North America lecturing and presenting the Swissedent
concepts in over 22 cities in the US and Canada. During
this time he continued his education and became an expert
in Dental Kinesiology, Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome,
and the effects a patients dental health had on their overall
Medical health. In 1979 Doctor Smudde left the Swissedent
Foundation to open his own private practice, but continued
to lecture on the Swissedent system. In 1981 he was invited
to teach at the University of Southern California to the
students of the Post Graduate Department in Prosthetic Dentistry,
and was later invited by the Medical Staff of the Cedar
Sinai Hospital to Lecture on the Research and Findings related
to Medical Dental Health Care.
Meanwhile Swissedent became one of the largest suppliers
of porcelain teeth in the North America, and in 1987 Doctor
Frush began negotiations with Productivity Training Corporation
(PTC) in San Jose, California to sell the Swissedent Corporation.
The sale of Swissedent to PTC was concluded on March 6,
1987 with conditions of the sale that Doctor Frush retained
ownership of Accu-Dent Research & Development Company.
Through this sale by Doctor Frush, PTC now held the rights
to the name Swissedent. In 1992 only five years after the
sale from Doctor Frush, PTC lost the right from Candulor
of Switzerland to sell the Swiss line of teeth and products.
These Swiss teeth and products that Doctor Frush had acquired
the exclusive right to in 1952 and sold under the name Swissedent
were no longer available in North America. To confuse matters
more PTC sold the right to use the name Swissedent to Austenal
of Dentsply. Austenal began to label Kenson teeth with the
Swissedent brand. These teeth were not the same quality
and the end result was the sullying of the Swissedent brand
name.
How to again make these teeth available in North America
became an important mission for the denture practitioners
using these teeth from Switzerland. One person came to the
minds of all interested, and that was someone who shared
the ideas of Doctor Frush, ideas that expanded far beyond
the sale of denture teeth, but to change the denture industry,
and to educate the denture practitioner so they could also
deliver a more natural looking and better functioning dentures,
and that was Doctor Roy Smudde.
So in 1993 Doctor Smudde went to Switzerland and acquired
the distribution rights from Candulor for these same denture
teeth originally imported and distributed by Doctor John
Frush under the name Swissedent. In 1994 Doctor Smudde formed
Geneva Dental Incorporated and created the trademark for
these teeth under the name Geneva 2000 for distribution
in US and Canada, and in that same year he established the
Geneva Dental Institute, an educational facility and subsidiary
of Geneva Dental to disseminate AGD approved Continuing
Education on the Geneva 2000 prosthetic system, the same
system using the same tools that Doctor Frush developed
over twenty years ago.
Doctor Smudde has personally educated hundreds of dental
professionals in the Swissedent and now the Geneva 2000
Denture System, and since 1993 under his stewardship Geneva
Dental has become the second largest distributor of porcelain
teeth in the US. He also has introduced practice building
materials using before and pictures to the denture industry,
and has helped dentist build successful and profitable denture
practices using these products, tools and techniques.
Doctor Smudde is currently working as a private practitioner
in Los Angeles, California, and continues to teach hands-on
seminars in the Geneva Denture System. Doctor Frush is currently
enjoying retirement in Solvang California.
