To help educate the professional community
Doctor Frush formed the Swissedent Foundation an educational
arm to his company, and began to build a staff to help in
his endeavor. He produced a series of six articles for the
Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry on the Swissedent technology
between the years of 1956 and 1958. These articles became
required reading for the dental student in most schools,
and in 1957 he was appointed to the Post Graduate staff
at the University of Southern California, School of Dentistry.
From 1960 to 1963 he gave over 300 courses on clinical procedures
and the use of Swissedent products to graduate dentists
and technicians, this included post graduate training at
all but two University Schools of Dentistry in the United
States. In 1961 Doctor Frush again spent time in Switzerland,
this time to help in the design phase for a major improvement
in the color of the Swiss teeth. This was to become the
new physiologic color combination for a new line of teeth,
and a license was granted to Candulor for manufacturing.
During this time Doctor Frush was also busy developing the
tools needed to make it easier for the dental professionals
to implement his new occlusion and esthetic concepts. In
1960 he developed a more accurate method for esthetic selection
of Swissedent anterior tooth molds using a new device called
the Alameter. He also produced a simplified device called
the Papillameter to help in setting Swissedent teeth for
natural appearance. The Alameter was developed using information
from a study that showed that in ninety-six percent of people,
the width of the nares opening was the same width as the
four front anteriors. With this information the correct
width of the six anterior arch segment could be established.
The Papillameter was developed to determine the distance
from the incisal papilla to the length of upper lip at rest.
The measurements from these two tools were to be integral
in establishing the esthetic guidelines for the denture
as well as the proper plane of occlusion for Doctor Frush's
Centimeter posteriors. Thirty years later these two tools
have become synonymous with premium denture construction,
with many companies manufacturing their own versions of
these tools.
In 1968 he developed and began manufacturing the Accu-Dent
Impression System, an irreversible hydrocolloid single impression
system. This system reduced the time of the impression procedure
clinically from 2 or more hours and two visits to 15 minutes
and one visit by the patient. It consistently reduced the
cost of this procedure to the dental office by at least
90%. This innovative system presented an entirely new concept
of structuring the impression procedure in the dental office.
Its advantage to the patient in preventing pain and long,
arduous post insertion visits, proved to be a primary advantage
over any competitive products.
He now had the makings of an entirely new denture system
that could address the problems that all denture patients
encountered, stability and esthetics. In 1970 an important
new member was added to the Swissedent team, Doctor Roy
A. Smudde a private practitioner in Terra Haute Indiana,
and a graduate from Indiana University School of Dentistry.
Doctor Smudde attended a continuing education course in
Chicago taught by Doctor Frush and the International Prosthodontic
Conference, the teaching arm of the Swissedent Foundation.
He was so impressed with the esthetics and the function
of the Swissedent denture system that he dedicated the next
two next years training to gain Diplomat status in the International
Prosthodontic Conference.
