The
Evolution of the Geneva 2000 Denture System
In 1951, Doctor John P. Frush, a graduate of the University
of Southern California School of Dentistry, traveled to
Switzerland in search of denture artistry that he had only
heard about. In Switzerland he attended a postgraduate course
in complete prosthodontics where he learned about new procedures
and products to restore the natural appearance of edentulous
patients. Doctor Frush was at the time practicing dentistry
in San Marino, California, and after this trip he would
go on to become one of the most important innovators, entrepreneurs,
and educators in the field of dentures that the dental community
has ever known.
Doctor Frush returned to Switzerland a year later and landed
the exclusive North American distribution rights from Candulor
AG for the Swiss line of denture teeth and products that
he was introduced to at the course he attended. Candulor,
who had sponsored the post graduate course Doctor Frush
attended, manufactured an anterior tooth line that was the
most natural looking Frush had ever seen. Nothing like it
existed in the US. Doctor Frush's deal with Candulor was
to private label a line of porcelain denture teeth for distribution
in North America under Doctor Frush's company name at the
time Swissedent, located in Glendale, California. This new
line of porcelain anterior teeth was called the Swissedent
900 series.
Doctor Frush was a true visionary, and his vision was not
yet complete. His ideas expanded far beyond the sale of
denture teeth, he wanted to change the denture industry,
and to do this he needed to develop the tools to go along
with the Swissedent 900 series teeth, and to educate the
denture practitioner so they could also deliver a more natural
looking denture.
Not only did Doctor Frush want to help practitioners deliver
a more natural looking denture, but he also had the idea
to develop a new form of denture occlusion designed with
the edentulous patient in mind. He spent the next six years
researching and developing what would become an entirely
new concept in posterior tooth design. All of his practical
research had shown him that the problems most denture wearers
faced were with the stability of the lower denture, and
this was due to the opposing forces created from cusp occlusion.
Flat plane occlusion had already become a fixture in the
industry, but it had not taken hold and was only used by
a small niche due to it's problems with functional mastication,
it's lack of bilateral balance and the creation of additional
incline planes during the adjustment phase. Doctor Frush's
ideas were to create a posterior tooth that would function
efficiently during mastication, have bilateral balance through
all fazes of function, and to eliminate all interceptions
and inclined planes that would create instability. He turned
again to Candulor who agreed to create this line of posteriors
to his specifications. In 1958 after six years of research
and development this new line of posteriors began to be
manufactured and sold under the same name as Doctor Frush's
anterior line, the Swissedent 900 series, it was called
the Centrimatic Posterior.
